Reviewing Guidelines

Please return your review via Email to TEP@Millersville.edu.  Include in the subject line of your email "Review of TEP ms. # xxxx."   Attach your review to your email as an MSWord and/or RTF document (both may be best).

In your review, make only one of the following overall recommendations regarding the manuscript:

    1. Accept as is or with only minor revisions
(Only editorial revisions, if any, need to be made.)
    2. Accept conditionally, upon completion of specified revisions.
(Some substantive revisions are needed, but the editors should decide whether they have been successfully made; no further peer review is necessary.)
    3. Invite resubmission, after extensive revisions
(Required revisions are extensive.  However, the content is of enough promise and potential interest to the TEP audience to warrant returning the revised manuscript to the reviewers for another round of reviews.)
    4. Reject
(The manuscript in its current form is clearly inappropriate for publication in TEP.  If major changes in focus, content or presentation indicated by the reviewers can be made, and the author wishes to resubmit the manuscript, it should be treated as a new submission and sent to a new set of reviewers.)
  • Regardless of your recommendation, please provide detailed, specific feedback regarding the strengths and weaknesses of the manuscript in your written review.  Outlining the strengths of the manuscript is as important as explaining its weaknesses, both to balance potentially more negative comments by other reviewers and guide authors as to what to preserve during the revision process.  When discussing weaknesses, please make constructive suggestions for improvement.  If you reject the manuscript for publication, please recommend changes that might make it publishable in other suggested outlets.  Please separate major conceptual issues from minor changes in your review.  You do not need to note proofreading or simple grammatical errors; these will be dealt with in the final editorial process.
  • After the tracking editor has read it, your review will be forwarded to the author(s) as is, so please write your review as if you were directly addressing the author(s) (e.g., "You need to restrict your conclusions to issues that your data specifically address . . " rather than "The author draws conclusions unwarranted by his data.").  Be candid, but use a respectful and helpful tone; as a respected reviewer in this field, you are a mentor and colleague, as well as a judge.  All your feedback to the author should be contained in your review.
  • Please indicate in the body of your email whether you wish to sign your review or to remain anonymous as a reviewer.  This decision is completely up to you; either stance may be appropriate in differing cases.
  • In some cases, you may also wish to add some comments for the editors' eyes only to your review; please include these in the body of your email.  If necessary, also feel free to telephone the editor with your concerns.
  • Remember to keep the review process confidential; do not share copies or verbal information about manuscripts, reviews, or study contents with anyone but the editors.
  • To keep our commitments to authors, reviews must be returned within one month of receipt (see date on accompanying Email).  If you cannot meet that deadline, or feel uncomfortable reviewing the manuscript for any reason, please notify the editor immediately so that another reviewer can be assigned.
  • Again, thank you for your willingness to serve as a reviewer for TEP.  Your time and dedication make an important contribution to improving the quality of scholarship in our field.
